What the course covers

Organised by Cisco's own objective domains, so what you study maps onto what you are assessed on.

Network fundamentals — 20%

Roles of routers, switches, and endpoints; cabling and interface types; TCP and UDP; IPv4 and IPv6 addressing and subnetting done quickly enough to be useful; wireless principles; virtualisation and switching concepts.

Network access — 20%

VLANs across multiple switches, trunking, spanning tree, EtherChannel, and wireless: WLC architecture, AP modes, and the management access paths.

IP connectivity — 25%

Reading a routing table and knowing why a route was chosen, static routing for IPv4 and IPv6, single-area OSPFv2, and first-hop redundancy. The largest domain, and the one where troubleshooting practice pays back most.

IP services — 10%

NAT, NTP, DHCP and DNS in an operational role, SNMP, syslog, QoS concepts, SSH access, and TFTP and FTP in a network-management context.

Security fundamentals — 15%

Threats and mitigation, AAA concepts, password policy, access control lists, layer 2 security features, wireless security protocols, and configuring a WLAN with WPA2 PSK through the GUI.

Automation and programmability — 10%

How automation changes network management, controller-based and software-defined architectures, REST APIs, JSON interpretation, and configuration management concepts including Ansible and Terraform.

Labs, prerequisites & the exam

In the labs

Where the hours actually go. Each of these is done, not watched.

  • Build a multi-switch VLAN and trunking topology, then break spanning tree and work out what happened from the switches rather than the diagram.
  • Configure single-area OSPF across several routers and trace a path packet by packet.
  • Implement NAT and DHCP for a small site, then troubleshoot a client that gets an address but no internet.
  • Write access control lists to a written policy and verify them from both directions.
  • Configure a WLAN with WPA2 PSK through a wireless controller.
  • Query a network device over a REST API and parse the JSON — the automation domain, done rather than described.
  • Timed troubleshooting sets: a topology with a fault, on the clock.

The exam is not adaptive, but you cannot return to a question once answered, so pacing matters more than on most exams. Cisco refreshes the 200-301 blueprint periodically — check Cisco's own exam page for the current version and domain weights before booking.

Questions about CCNA

How long does it take to get CCNA certified?

Do I need to buy Cisco hardware to practise?

Are there prerequisites for the CCNA exam?

Cisco sets none. In practice, candidates who are comfortable with binary arithmetic and general IT concepts have an easier time with the subnetting and fundamentals domains, and the course covers both from the start.

Does CCNA still matter with everything moving to cloud?

The addressing, routing, and segmentation concepts CCNA teaches are exactly what a cloud VPC, a subnet, and a security group are built from. Cloud did not remove the network; it moved the configuration surface. The 200-301 blueprint reflects that with its own automation and programmability domain.
